IOWA'S INTENSIVE SUMMER LITERACY PROGRAM

The Iowa early literacy legislation and policies were developed to promote effective evidence-based programming, instruction and assessment practices across schools to support all students becoming proficient readers by the end of third grade.  Rules require public schools to offer and provide an intensive summer literacy program (ISLP) beginning Summer 2017.

The DE and the Iowa Reading Research Center are conducting pilot summer schools in the summer of 2016, and further guidance will be forthcoming on the conclusion of the pilots.  The Chief Administrators of the Iowa AEA Education System are developing resources for district leadership teams to engage in conversations around the eight (8) criteria.
